Penny's Party Plan
Cash Pyle read the e-invite from Penny Stockton with a grin. A Christmas party sounded like the perfect way to shake off his holiday blues. Penny’s desserts were legendary, and the promise of a cookie-decorating contest and hot chocolate bar sealed the deal. “Bring your favorite dish,” the invite instructed, and he had just the thing: his grandma’s famous sausage balls.
As the party date neared, Penny and her roommate, Julie, turned their small apartment into a festive wonderland on a tight budget. Penny’s eye for deals meant she’d snagged decorations from dollar and discount stores. Julie, the artistic type, used her glue gun to transform simple supplies into eye-catching centerpieces. Together, they strung twinkling lights and hung homemade garlands.
"Your craftiness is unparalleled," Penny said, laughing, as Julie put the finishing touches on a wreath made of ribbon scraps and pinecones.
Julie wasn’t done yet. She offered to bring her karaoke machine, a tool she used with her students, and curated a playlist of holiday favorites submitted by the guests. Meanwhile, Penny scoured the local library’s collection for the Christmas movies on everyone’s lists, picking up a few DVD copies and digital downloads.
Penny’s party prep didn’t stop at decor and entertainment. The grocery store's baking sale had been a godsend. She stocked up on cookie ingredients and loaded her shopper card with digital coupons to stay within budget. On a chilly Saturday, she and Julie spent hours baking sugar cookies and gingerbread men. By the time they were done, the air smelled like cinnamon and vanilla, and Penny’s cheeks were flushed with happiness.
"Okay," Julie said, inspecting the hot chocolate bar they’d assembled. “We’ve got whipped cream, marshmallows, candy canes, and sprinkles. I think we’re ready to wow some people.”
On party night, Penny’s apartment buzzed with laughter and carols. The karaoke machine was a hit, and the cookie-decorating contest brought out everyone’s competitive spirit. Cash Pyle, wielding a frosting tube, managed to create a surprisingly intricate reindeer, earning him a few impressed nods.
Later, as he poured himself another mug of hot chocolate, he paused. The ceramic mug in his hand seemed familiar.
"Nice, right?" Penny said, catching his look. "I found those at that little discount store. Same day I saw you and your grandma shopping there."
Cash laughed. “You’re kidding. No wonder it felt like déjà vu!”
“Everything in this place has a story,” Penny said, motioning around. “But the best part of the night? Watching you all make memories without blowing anyone’s budget.”
Cash lifted his mug in a toast. “Here’s to that, Penny. And here’s to you.”
By the time the last carol had been sung and the final cookie eaten, Cash knew one thing for certain: Penny Stockton had turned frugality into an art form, and her Christmas party was proof that the best things in life didn’t have to cost a fortune.
