Printing Profits: Cash Pyle’s New Venture

Cash Pyle was no stranger to making the most of a good deal. When his sister, Diamond, called raving about the custom phone case he had made with a 3D printer, he hadn’t expected what came next.

“My friends love it! They all want one,” she said excitedly. “Do you take orders?”

Cash hesitated for only a moment. Diamond didn’t know that her case had been an experiment using some discounted materials he had picked up from his grandmother’s favorite craft store. Nor did she know that he had made it using the 3D printer at the local library. Still, this was an opportunity. “Give me a couple of days to figure out the costs and details,” he told her.

He spent the next two days running numbers—factoring in material costs, print time, and how much he could reasonably charge. Once he had it figured out, he called Diamond back with the pricing and sent her an order form. By the end of the day, he had two orders. By the end of the week, he had a few more.

As he completed each custom case, he put his earnings aside. When the last order from Diamond’s friends was delivered, he realized he had enough to buy his own 3D printer. Excited, he shared the news with Grandma Pyle over Sunday dinner.

“Well now,” she said with a proud smile. “You think you could make something for the church fundraiser in a few months?”

“Depends on what you need,” Cash replied. After gathering a few details, he told her that if they put in an order by the end of the month, he could make it happen.

The following weekend, his friend Cary came over to watch a basketball game. During halftime, Cash showed him the new printer and explained his upcoming project for Grandma Pyle.

Cary leaned back thoughtfully. “You know,” he said, “my boss has been talking about getting custom tablet cases for the team when we’re on the road. Might be something you could pitch.”

By the end of the game, the two of them had a solid proposal. Cary pitched the idea to his employer—who also happened to be Cash’s former boss—and convinced him to take a chance on a small order. What started as a personal project was quickly becoming something much bigger, and Cash knew this was only the beginning.
